FAQs

Why purple?

Purple is the colour for eating disorders recovery. It's also, as I've learned over the years, the awareness colour for several other causes - Alzheimer's, domestic violence, cystic fibrosis, and animal abuse, to name a few. Periwinkle has often been considered to be the awareness colour for eating disorders - purple and periwinkle are pretty close! I avoid being too technical about the colour choice for the ribbons; it's the acts associated with wearing a ribbon that matters, not its colour. Butterflies are a common symbol for eating disorder recovery, and I intend to use butterfly images as part of the campaign as well.

I know someone with an eating disorder. How can I get him/her the help that he/she needs?

We have a section for that in the links as well. There are many websites that offer you advice on how to help a friend or family member with an eating disorder, and dozens of organizations that can help them.

How can I get a speaker for my school/workplace?

At the moment, you have to go through your local eating disorders support, advocacy, or recovery organization, if there is one in your area. You can find a list of these organizations on the links page.

When is eating disorders awareness week?

Eating Disorders Awareness Week varies from country to country. In Canada, it is the first full week of February. In the United States and United Kingdom, it is the last week in February. Most other countries share the same awareness week as Canada or the US and UK.
